Description
Add a stunning piece of 19th-century sacred art to your collection with this rare antique Gothic Revival cast iron devotional piece.
Dating to circa 1880, this heavy statue is part of a church salvage collection from northern France.
It was crafted during the massive influx of pilgrims following the official church authorization of the 1871 apparition of Notre Dame de Pontmain in France.
It features an intricate architectural design showcasing the central figure of Notre Dame de Pontmain within a highly detailed arched niche, complemented by twisted pillars, fish-scale patterned brickwork, and a decorative dome finial.
The reverse side reveals an authentic unpainted cast texture. It’s visually very beautiful, and it has aged to reveal ancient verdigris to the metal, old gold and green hues.
The very top tip of the finial has a clean, almost unnoticeable break where a small decorative cross would have been originally. An exceptional collector’s piece for enthusiasts of Gothic architecture, sacred art, or historic French church antiquities.
Perfect as a unique Christmas table setting or devotional piece. This lovely object looks enchanting when back lit by candlelight.
This is one of the most stand-out pieces in our collection.
Used, genuine antique condition with natural paint wear and weathering appropriate for age.
Height 30 cm, width 12.5 cm, projection 8 cm and weight a substantial 870g.
